For DJ's eyes only!
If you are not playing DJ...
STOP READING!
DJ is a theater kid that is secretly a time-traveler. You are set to play Gizmo TI-83 in Oceanside High School’s production of Soul Wars, The Musical. Some people think that you only got the leading role because you and the director, Mo, are head-over-heels in love with each other. But, you are actually an incredibly talented stage actor.
You don’t remember much about your parents because you never met your dad and your mother disappeared when you were six years old.
Your mom called you DJ and sometimes Junior. She really liked movies, especially Sci-Fi. You think her name was Shawn, and you know that she was born in the year 1982. You can’t remember why, but you remember she used to say that a lot.
You never met your dad. Your mom said he got killed by a cop at a high school party in 1999 that got out of hand. She did not talk about your dad very often, but she did say that his favorite movies were Point Break (1991) and The Butterfly Effect (2004). And that, before he died, he was planning to spend the whole summer driving up and down the coast, living out of his van and surfing, just like Johnny Utah.
When you were six years old, your mom took you to a movie theater to watch a re-boot of her favorite sci-fi franchise, The Rise of Android 80085: A Soul Wars Story (2006). Right before the movie started, she turned to you and said, “This is a big day for you Junior. It’s your first movie. Your dad would be totally bugging out right now. He always said that movies saved his life. He’d be so happy to know we’re here together.”
That was the last time you saw your mom.
While watching the film, you became completely engrossed. The sounds, the lights, the big screen, the smell of popcorn! Your entire world disappeared around you. It was as if you were being transported into a different reality... When the lights came up, your mother was gone. The year was 1983 and you were sitting in a theater with a bunch of people who had just finished watching Soul Wars III: Revenge of Dr Quantum (1983).
Unsure of how you traveled through time, you spent your childhood avoiding the big screen. As such, you developed a love for the stage. You even starred as Puck in your middle school’s production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream.
Then, in 1991, Point Break premiered in theaters. You remembered your birth mother saying it was one of your dad’s favorite movies, so you decided to risk it and bought yourself a ticket. When the movie ended, the lights came up and the year was 2001. Everyone around you had just finished watching The Fast & The Furious (2001).
You spent most of your high school years in the early 2000s, avoiding movies and trying not to run into your mother or your younger self (in fear of creating a time paradox). You threw yourself into acting, even reprising your role as Puck in your High School’s rendition of A Midsummer’s Night Dream.
But then, against your better judgement, you watched another one of your dad’s favorite movies, The Butterfly Effect (2004). At the end of the film, you found yourself in 1998, in a theater that had just shown Sliding Doors (1998).
Now, desperate to find your birth parents and learn how to control your time travel abilities, you decided to stay in the year 1998 and never watch another movie again!
Of all the years you've experienced, 1999 is by far your favorite, it’s the year you met Mo. Mo is the director of Oceanside’s production of Soul Wars, The Musical. They are a total sci-fi / movie nerd, sexy as hell, and really fun to be around. You don’t know what it is about Mo, but you feel like you’ve known them your whole life. This summer, the two of you even had sex for the first time!
So, other than not knowing who, when or where your parents are, life is pretty good.
Contact Mo. You are starting to feel guilty about keeping secrets from them. Tell Mo you want to talk to them about something important at Andy’s party. If they seem worried, tell them to “quit bugging out” (it’s an inside joke from Mo’s favorite sci-fi TV show that has become a way to reassure each other of your undying love).
If Ryan contacts you about a talent show, tell Ryan that you would be honored to participate! Brag about your history playing Puck and offer to deliver Puck’s iconic final monologue from A Midsummer Night's Dream.
